The method
R.A.C.E. four parts, in this order
Role
Tell it who to be. Seniority and domain change the vocabulary and the evidence it reaches for.
Act as a lifecycle email copywriter for a B2B SaaS company.
Action
One exact task, one strong verb. Write, analyse, summarise, not “help me with”.
Write a 120-word re-engagement email.
Context
Who it is for, what they already know, and the rules it must respect. The part everyone skips.
Users whose free trial lapsed 30 or more days ago. Warm, direct, no hype.
Execute
Shape of the output: length, format, structure, and what to leave out.
One call to action, plus a subject line under 45 characters.
Free AI prompt generator
No prompt yet? Generate one.
The builder asks the RACE questions for you (role, task, audience, format) and assembles a prompt that scores in the nineties. Four steps, no blank box.

One click opens it in your model, in that model's own dialect.
Before and after, side by side
Same request. One of them gets a usable answer first time.
write me an email to old trial users
No role. No audience. No length. No format. No constraints. The model has to guess at everything that matters.
Act as a lifecycle email copywriter for a B2B SaaS company. Write a 120-word re-engagement email to users whose free trial lapsed 30 or more days ago. Audience: busy operations managers who signed up, never finished onboarding, and have since forgotten us. Tone: warm and direct, no hype. Format the output as a subject line under 45 characters, then the body in three short paragraphs, then one call to action. It must sound like a person wrote it, and avoid tired openers such as "just checking in".
Role, audience, length, tone, structure, and two things to avoid. Every dimension the scorer measures now has something to measure.

The fundamentals
What makes a good AI prompt?
A good AI prompt is the difference between an answer that disappoints and one you can ship. Most people write prompts that are too vague, too short, or missing the context the model needs to do the job properly, and then blame the model when the output is generic. The example at the top of this page scores 24 out of 100, and it is the kind of thing almost everyone types.
Promptrace fixes this in two directions. It is a prompt generator: the builder above asks the RACE questions and assembles the prompt for you. It is also a prompt optimizer: every prompt is scored across seven research-backed dimensions (role, clarity, specificity, context, format, constraints, and examples) so you can see exactly why it works. The same framework powers the standalone prompt scorer at /scorer, which lets you score prompts you already wrote.
Browse the prompt library for 50 tested AI prompt examples, try the dedicated AI image prompt generator for Midjourney, Flux, GPT Image and more, grab the social media content calendar prompt if you need a month of dated posts with the captions written, or read the prompt engineering guide for a deeper walk-through of every dimension.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
What is Promptrace?
Promptrace is a free AI prompt builder and scorer for ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Paste a prompt to get a transparent score, or answer a few guided questions and Promptrace assembles a high-scoring prompt for you. No signup, no usage limits, no prompt-engineering knowledge required.
How does the prompt generator work?
Promptrace is a guided wizard. Step 1: pick the kind of thing you need (write, image, analyse, advise, code, or other). For text branches you then pick a subtype (email, blog post, etc.), add details like audience and tone, and get your assembled prompt with a transparent seven-dimension score plus one-click 'Run in ChatGPT / Claude / Gemini' buttons. For the image branch you go straight to details: pick a model (Midjourney, Nano Banana, GPT Image, Ideogram, Flux, or generic), a visual style, mood, camera, lighting and more, and get a prompt in the right dialect for your chosen model with a deep-link to open it there.
How is the score calculated?
Seven research-backed dimensions: role definition, task clarity, specificity, context, output format, constraints, and examples. Each is weighted and computed in your browser, so you can see the exact reason every mark was won or lost. Nothing is hidden behind a black box.
What is the RACE framework?
RACE stands for Role, Action, Context, Execute, and it is the order a strong prompt puts its information in. Role tells the model who to be, Action gives it one exact task, Context supplies the audience and the rules it must respect, and Execute defines the shape of the output. Promptrace rebuilds weak prompts along those four parts, which is what moves the score.
Is this a prompt optimizer or a prompt generator?
Both. The builder generates a high-scoring prompt from your guided choices; that's the generator. The same prompt is then scored across seven dimensions and you can tweak it with AI; that's the optimizer. If you already have a prompt you wrote yourself, paste it into the dedicated scorer at /scorer instead.
Is Promptrace really free?
Yes. Generating prompts, scoring prompts, browsing the library, and the AI tweak feature are all free forever, with no signup required and no daily limit. The site is funded entirely by display ads.
Do you store my prompts?
Scoring runs entirely in your browser, so prompts you score never reach our servers at all. The one exception is the optional 'Tweak with AI' button, which sends that single prompt to Google's Vertex AI to be rewritten and does not retain it afterwards. We do not build a prompt history, and there is no account to attach one to.
Which AI models does Promptrace support?
The generated prompts are designed to work with any large language model: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Midjourney, Nano Banana, GPT Image, Ideogram, Flux, plus Llama, Mistral and others. The 'Run in ChatGPT' button opens ChatGPT with your prompt pre-filled. The Claude and Gemini buttons copy the prompt to your clipboard and open the chat for you to paste, because Anthropic and Google don't currently support URL-based prompt prefill.
