How AI prompt scoring works
Promptrace scores your AI prompts across seven research-backed dimensions that determine how well ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, or any large language model will understand and respond to your request.

Why prompt quality matters
The difference between a mediocre AI response and a brilliant one almost always comes down to the prompt. A well-crafted prompt gives the AI the context, constraints, and clarity it needs to produce exactly what you want — on the first try.
Most people write prompts that are too vague, too short, or missing critical information. Promptrace identifies exactly what's missing and shows you how to fix it — for free, instantly, without needing an account.
The seven scoring dimensions
Role definition
Weight: 12%Does the prompt tell the AI who to be? Patterns like "You are a...", "Act as...", or "Expert in..." signal a clear persona.
Task clarity
Weight: 18%How many specific action verbs are present? Words like "write", "analyse", "compare", "generate" give the AI a clear directive.
Specificity
Weight: 20%Does the prompt include concrete details? Numbers, proper nouns, quoted text, and longer prompts all indicate specificity.
Context
Weight: 15%Is there background information? Audience, purpose, tone, industry, and other contextual signals help the AI tailor its response.
Output format
Weight: 15%Does the prompt specify what shape the answer should take? Bullet points, tables, word counts, and structural terms like "step-by-step" all count.
Constraints
Weight: 10%Are there boundaries? Words like "don't", "avoid", "only", "maximum", and "keep it" set guardrails that prevent the AI from wandering.
Examples
Weight: 10%Does the prompt include examples? Phrases like "for example", "such as", "similar to", or "here's an example" dramatically improve output quality.
How the AI rewrite works
When you choose to rewrite a prompt, our AI analyses every weak dimension identified by the scorer and systematically improves the prompt. It adds role definitions, sharpens task clarity, includes specific details, provides context, specifies output format, adds constraints, and suggests examples — all while preserving your original intent.
You can unlock a rewrite by watching a short ad (free) or by subscribing for unlimited access. After the rewrite, you see your original prompt and the improved version side by side, with both scores, so you can see exactly what changed and why.
Common questions
Where do the seven prompt dimensions come from?
The dimensions are drawn from published prompt-engineering research and from analysis of which prompts consistently produce strong outputs across ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. Each dimension is independently scored and weighted by its observed impact on response quality.
Does Promptrace work with Claude and Gemini, not just ChatGPT?
Yes. The scoring framework is model-agnostic — the same seven dimensions apply to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Llama, Mistral, and any other large language model. The AI rewrite feature is currently powered by Google Gemini 2.5 Flash.
Can I trust the scores?
The scorer runs entirely client-side using deterministic pattern matching, so the same prompt always produces the same score. Use the score as a directional signal of what's missing, not as an absolute quality verdict — ultimately the only test of a prompt is whether it gets you the output you want.
